The East Neuk of Fife is situated in a quiet, rather inaccessible corner of Scotland projecting out into the North Sea. Life in the area is centred around five main villages; Elie, St Monance, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. It is a place of picturesque charm where the worst excesses of twentieth century life have not left their mark. But it is a community under threat: the fishing industry is endangered by European regulations, and the character of the East Neuk is already being altered by the influx of incomers from the south. Plans to develop communications will inevitably open the area to further influences which may destroy the fragile infastructue that has been built up over the centuries. For nearly four years, photographer Cliff Wilson has devoted his time to capturing the people and way of life of the area. His strong and earthy pictures evoke most powerfully the very essence and life-blood of a community. He has gone to extraordinary lengths to secure his photographs; soaked to the skin on fishing boats, exhausted to the point of collapse waiting for a cow to calf, numb with cold in the first light of a winter dawn but always in the right place with his camera at the ready. This book stands as a testament to a unique part of Scotland and to the patience and determination of one man.
