The Jacobites were people who believed that the Stuarts should have remained on the thrones of Scotland and England and are named after James, the Old Pretender, whose Catholic religion forbade him to be monarch. Many people throughout the British Isles supported him including non-Catholics which led to the first Rebellion in 1715.
Later his son Bonnie Prince Charlie staked his claim to the thrones in the Rebellion of 1745. This is a period of Scottish history often written about by Academics as there is a number of complex issues. It has also been romanticised and written about by fiction authors such as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.
