The East Neuk of Fife is a wee corner of Scotland south of St. Andrews, stretching from Fife Ness and Balcomie golf course in the East to Lower Largo and Lundin Links in the West including the popular fishing villages of Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail, Pittenweem and St Monans.
Inland the area includes Kingsbarns on the road between Crail and St. Andrews, famed for its Golf course and other golf courses in the region include Charlton, Dumbarnie Links, Elie & Earlsferry, Lundin Links and Lundin Ladies courses.
Kingsbarns also has a popular garden attraction at Cambo Estate with its Snowdrop collection and there is Kellie Castle, near Arncroach, a National Trust for Scotland property once owned by the famous Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer and his son, sculptor Hew Lorimer. During the summer months Kellie Castle garden teams up with the private garden’s at nearby Balcaskie estate. Other private gardens that open to the public as part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme are Balcarres house near Colinsburgh, the ancestral seat of the Premier Earl of Scotland, the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres and a few miles west is Teasses estate gardens near Upper Largo which are also open after substantial renovations.
The ruined mansion of Largo House and its walled garden are also in the planning stage of renovation too. It has a commanding view of beautiful Largo Bay with its long stretch of golden sand from Shell Bay caravan park to the small village of Lower Largo, birthplace of Alexander Selkirk, the real life inspiration for Robinson Crusoe.
